I remember Rick Norton. Great QB, and if I recall, his pro career was back-up to a guy named Griese, who just happened to be the QB of perhaps the greatest pro team of all time.
Also Tom Hutchinson, who was an AWESOME receiver... looked like he was on a pogo stick when he would stop and jump vertically to catch a pass.
UK was simply pathetic most of the late 60's and early 70's, but a few fine memories... Dicky Lyons... NONE compare to that guy who played every position imaginable... Kick FG, Kick PAT, pass, run, catch, block...
Kansas State (? or Kansas) came to Stoll Field with one of the premier QB's in the nation. UK's defense played as never before and shut him down (injured him, too, I believe, not that you wanna see that happen) and stuffed their running game for negative net yards. Anybody remember that? Or is my memory slipping more than I thought?
Johnny Ray... UK lands the DC from mighty Notre Dame, starts getting recruits out of PA and other foreign lands (previously foreign to UK... but he knew nothing about offense.
I believe I could have been one of the most successful coaches of all time with Johnny Ray as the DC and Hal Mumme with his Air Raid as OC. Just needed someone to keep Hal's arrogance in check, and over-ride a few far-out calls, and that combination would be unbeatable, IMO. I still contend that Mumme was the victim of an AD and staff member that hung him out to dry.
Don't know much about football, but sure would enjoy a 9 or 10 win season within the next decade.

Been scanning Full Court Pressure by P, and found this lovely quote in the book about ole crook cmneuter. On page 44, he states that cm and roselle (the commie, if you remember) both decided to do away with Wildcat Lodge and make all the players stay in dorms.
Well, Joe B talked to P and told him, it would be a terrible idea that those kids could not be regular students at UK that they wouldn't be able to sleep or study and P saw the light and overruled the commie and cm. Have to hand it to him, he stood up for what was right, and yes that was over 20 years ago. How time flies.
In summary, cm was a low life!!!

This is a good example of the duo trying to dismantle the Kentucky Basketball program. Thank God Joe B. went to the coach at the time and talked some sense into him. Those were dark days for a UK fan but fortunately it turned around after two years of probation until the Tub ran us into the ditch once more.

I have no problem with any of what WCV said, with the exception of the Eddie Sutton stuff. I remember being at the state tournament and reading about Sutton offering to fire all of his assistants and even Mr. Wildcat if he could keep his job. Now that may have been planted by someone else, but I was sitting next to a man who said that he knew Bill K. and Mr. Wildcat told him that he, Bill Keightley would be at UK long after that Curley Headed --- was gone. So maybe WCV is right, but I don't think Mr. Keightley was doubting the story was true. I lost a little repect for C.M. when the condo story came out.

Tape, as ashamed as I am to admit it I believe the story about Curly offering to fire all his assistants incl Mr. Wildcat to save his own hide, are in fact true.
Most around the program at the time believed it to be true as well.

I remember Larry Sieple's fake punt like it was yesterday. For a couple of years we had some of the best individual talent in the SEC with Rick Norton, Rick Kestner, Sam Ball, Larry Sieple and several others. But Bradshaw had them so beat up due to his practice techniques that they came into the game wearing casts on their arms and legs. The game was a picnic compared to what they had to go through during the week. If you weren't hard nose tough, you wouldn't surive a week of Charlie Bradshaw. No team in history went through what the Thin Thirty went through. A couple of years ago I was talking to an "alumni" of Charlie Bradshaw's Thin Thirty. He said when recruits came on campus some players would pull them aside and whisper in their ear, "get the hell out of here and don't even think about coming to this place". But on the other hand I was talking to Rick Kestner and he said Charlie Bradshaw was tough but he came from Belfry and had a coach named "Bear Meat". He said he would put "Bear Meat" up against Bradshaw any day of the week. He knew what hard practices were and he laughed when he said at least at UK they worked out on grass. At Belfry they had a flat piece of ground that was covered with coal ash and a bone pile from the mines. The closest grass turf was over in West Virginia. He said you didn't want to get tackled because if you went down you would rip the hide off of your arms and legs. It was a different world back then. Absolutly true CHL about that quote, I was an acquaintence of a thin thirty alum living in Dawson Springs when I was helping coach South Hopkins as a para professional. He used to ride the bus with us and even went to camp one year, he had all kinds of stories about Bradshaw and none of 'em good.

i'll say this, i would rather have CM Newton 10000000000 times over Barnhardt... CM made a mistake hiring tubby, but to this day, he had the RIGHT idea about football and what our program needs to be successful, he just had the wrong guy (mummee) but CM was an innovator by trying something new and bring the spread into the SEC, which hadn't been done up to that point. I will hear all of the spin and how did this or that and didn't have a defense etc etc.. However, the broader vision, which you can now see in the SEC but across the country speaks for itself, it also provided the blue print needed to be successful... Also had Billy Donovan had a few more years, he would have been the selection when Rick left..

I want to thank all of you for providing this information to a young guy like me. Places like this are about the only place you can find this kind of info uncensored.
CHL mentioned the new UK president on page 2. Last year when the university was hiring the new VP of Student Affairs, the final four candidates each had an individual forum open to university staff and students. I attended two of these, including the one for Dr. Robert Mock Jr, who was eventually to the position- you could tell by the atmosphere of the forum he was the man staff and students wanted for the job. He's been a home-run hire so far.
The university will be hosting these same forums for the Presidential candidates. I will be in attendance, and would be willing to put forth any questions any poster here feels would be appropriate. I'm sure many of you have enough connections to find out the true answers, but I think it'd be interesting to here what they're willing to say publicly on critical issues regarding UK athletics.

In reality there are many many small players in the sceme of things around Lexington.
There is one small group thats only interest is basketball, and they will strive to do anything to keep the program relevent. But not to the detriment of football. There efforts are totally in helping basketball. They are heavy money and believe one thing, its one reason why Coach Cal is in Lexington today.
They didnt ask if it was ok to speak to Cal they just did it and then boom, he was hired.
Ask rr, he knows the story. He knew it when it was actually happening not some months or years later.
Footballs problem has never been lack of interest by the fans. No footballs problem has always been the UKAA itself.
They get in the way of any promotion of football.
Most folks think Commonwealth was an idea the University came up with, put on the drawing board and then built.
That is bullshit of the highest order. Fran Curci demanded a stadium and they were building Rupp and basically caved to him. But we were so f%@!ing cheap, even then, that we didnt even do the design work.
If you dont believe it,
You could have run down to Tampa where that exact stadium was built a few years before we built ours. We used their plans right down to the last nail.
Only thing we added was a helliport for all the coal mine owners to fly in for the games. At the time UK was the only college stadium that had one of these, but for the coal mine owners back in the day, well youd do it, simple as that.
Football could be huge in KY. Really huge, yet for decades we have put unqualified people in as AD even up to present day.

I remember the day after Billy D "turned us down" after BCG. Truth was we were already long gone.
Sort of like me saying Im not going to ever date Catherine Zeta Jones again.
We were in Chicago with Coach Cal when Billy was "Turning us down" finishing the deal.

There are 3 different sets of fans at UK.
One is obviously basketball, the other football, and of course the other just like Kman himself. He lives, breaths dies each sport which many of us do as well, but he is the picture boy for that.
Now when you go to the football crowd they will tell you of the absolute hatred they have for CM and everything he did to football. Not for football.
He then topped it off by naming Commonwealth field after himself. Wow what a legacy to leave behind. I know people that just explode everytime they are reminded that CM's name is hanging on the front of the stadium. His hirings in football set UK football back decades.
No one that was close to ground back in the black days of 88-89 will ever forget the things he did to basketball.
ie.................please look up Eric "Moon" Manual and start there for an example. Moon in todays terms would be Michael Gilchrist with a better outside shot if that gives you a picture. Totally destroyed by Newton and last I heard was bagging groceries in OK City. Unbelievable talent, nice kid, honor roll student, quit soft spoken, but CM had another mission then.
CM of those days sort of reminds me of Obama in a way. CM hated UK basketball in about the way O hates America. Then out of a quirk of history both are put in charge of the very institution they hated the most. Go figure.

Kman your the best when it comes to following both. I like to think of myself as a pretty heavy duty football and basketball fan, but you are what would be called a true UK fan.

Holy sh#t, Obama hates the United States? I guess he gave the order to kill Osama bin Laden as a way to appease the radicals? Seriously, you believe this? If so, go get help, now, not later, leave the damn house and get to the nearest psychiatrist asap. Politics is never a subject where a winner and loser are decided, but to say that the President of the United States hates our country is beyond idiotic and stupid. Couldn't let that one go.
