Or, I should say experiences as we went twice in the last month.
I had never been to NO before the SEC and always wanted to go. It is a terrible, dirty, filthy city. It is also a very dangerous city. It stinks to boot. The whole city has an odor of overflowing septic. Some said that smell wasn't there before Katrina, but others said it was.
Having said that, we did enjoy the visits because of the games. For the SEC the entire city was nothing but UK blue. I think even the city was surprised with the UK following. We drank way too much down on Bourbon St. Way too many Hand Grenades. If you have been there, you know.
The first time we stayed in what they call the Warehouse District and we were almost a mile from the French Quarter. For the fina flur we stayed right in the French Quarter only about two blocks off Bourbon St. I will say the city had much more police on duty for the FF than was there for the SEC.
We enjoyed the FF trip more not only because of the winning, but also because we had learned a bit from the first trip.
On Sat of the semi final game we walked over to the Superdome at about noon in order to try and get tickets. Of course scalpers were everywhere and we had a contact for a guy from Lexinton that was down there and he had upper level tickets for $300 each and plenty of them and he had about 20 lower level tickets for $1200 each. We knew we were going to get in as we would had paid the $300 to get in for Sat and then tried to move down on Monday.
We was talking one scalper that had Sat only lower level tickets and he wanted $600 each for them. We were going to make him an offer and then these UL folks came up to us and asked if we wanted tickets. They said the scalpers were trying to buy these 4 extra tickets they had for some friends that couldn't make it. They said they would rather sell them to someone going to the games than to scalpers. They were very lower level end zone tickets. They had 4 and would not split them up. Wanted $2400 for the four. The pretty quickly came down to $2000. I offered them $1800 and they took it. $450 each for lower level tickets for all games! Dumbass UL people!!
I don't know how to put pictures on here since changes were made to the site. I sent Chop the picture from our seats and the view. Maybe Chop can put it on here? We were right among the UL contingent for Saturday's game. They were gone, of course, on Monday. Electric atmosphere. On Sat it was probably about 60% UK, 20% Kansas and the other 20% between UL and OSU. UL probably had more people than OSU. OSU was clearly the least reprsented school there. That was a bit surprising. I guess if it had been football they would have been out in force?
Bourbon St was made bearable by all the UK fans presense. I would hate to think what it's like if not surrounded by UK fans.
We went over to Jackson Square for Gameday on Monday. My wife was beside UK Elvis and the UK Pope when they panned the crowd. It got cut short by a rainstorm, so we don't know if any of that made it on TV.
Just being there on Monday night when won the title was so emotional. Comes back now as I type this. Very hard to describe the feelings to someone not there. I am so proud of this team and Cal and the fans.
I wish Cal had not called off the dogs in the second half and just blown them out. I wasn't worried that we would lose even when they cut it to 5. I was just disappointed that we let them do that. It could have been a massacre. They had no answer for anyone. I don't know how it looked on TV, but they fouled the hell out of Davis everytime he got the ball. Teague is so fast. never came across that way on TV. In person he is a blur. I would have loved to have seen Aaron Craft try to guard him.
I would go back to NO for an event such as thios. I don't care about going back for anything else. Very disappointed in that city.
Chop, you have my permission to post those pictures if you know how. I am so proud to be a UK Wildcat fan!!
