Rupp had a run in the late-mid 40,s to the undefeated 54 team you should read about. From memory there was 3 NCAA champs, an NIT champ when the NIT was the NCAA equal, and the undefeated team that got a Helms title.

Rupp had a run in the late-mid 40,s to the undefeated 54 team you should read about. From memory there was 3 NCAA champs, an NIT champ when the NIT was the NCAA equal, and the undefeated team that got a Helms title. That was truly a magical era in UK history. I have read so much about those years. Every real college basketball fan knows that Rupp created the fast break. I have seen video of the Fabulous Five after Groza took a defensive rebound off the boards and the ball never touch the floor. Four passes later the result is a layup on the other end...took meer seconds. The key was turning and running down the floor after the rebound. These guys wanted to play basketball for Rupp. He didn't have to recruit because the players came to him, wrote him letters asking to play for the Wildcats. Todays game requires good recruiting. Cal gets this done and more...players want to play for Cal.

Three important things are need. 1) being able to recruit excellent players. Coach Cal does that. 2) discipline. Coach Cal has that and his players love him for it. 3) A system that works. Coach Cal has proven that his system works. At UK he has won 102 games in three years, an elite 8, 2 final fours and a national championship. I think Coach Cal can be rated as a great coach.
Another thing that was remarkable about Coach Rupp, about 80% of his players came from Kentucky.

Rupp also was the first coach to play a national schedule instead of a regional schedule. In the day, teams played close to home for financial reasons. What was then the equivilent of the NBA was centered in the northeast. Rupp started going there to play because he knew those who wanted to play pro ball had to play in front of the scouts to be noticed. He went where the pro teams and the scouts were.
BTW, I'm not talking about Rupp to cut down Cal. I'd rather have Cal than any coach around today.
