I spoke with my God Son who lives in Lexington yesterday. He played 5 years of football with the Cats and is a former teammate and close friend of C-Rod.
As some of you may have seen in various rumor mongering UK Web Sites on Facebook and other social media outlets, the news came out last week that C-Rod’s problematic issue,
in addition to the DUI, is petty as hell, but the kind of thing that stinks like shit.
I don’t know the exact dollars involved, but C-Rod signed several University of Kentucky Hospital Timesheets for work, that a whistle blowing hospital employee, alleges C-Rod did not actually perform.
This practice has been going on for literally a century with athletes and universities; however, there are some significant legal issues that are involved in these petty ass little infractions.
LSU for example once got into trouble for paying players to guard the gym against the intrusion of alligators. Which is certainly possible since the gymnasium is right on the riverbank,
but the NCAA who already hated Dale Brown, did not see the paid positions as necessary work.
There are dozens of other funny stories, like kids being hired as grounds keepers to watch the grass grow and to notify the grass mowers when mowing was required.
My God Son said that the allegations that C-Rod signed timesheets over a long period of time ARE TRUE and that C-Rod openly acknowledges that he signed the time sheets.
C-Rod, however; says that his job was to represent the UK Hospital around Lexington by attending various hospital functions, visiting kids
in the children’s hospital and making other public appearances for the hospital.
A whistle blower at the hospital says C-Rod’s actual job description was to be a driver and errand runner, for 20 hours a week at a pay rate of $15 an hour, which is roughly $15,000 per year.
The whistle blower’s complaint states that C-Rod never performed any of the work defined in his job description and rarely showed up at the hospital at all, except to sign timesheets.
IMO it is a petty bullshit issue, but if true, C-Rod committed felony fraud every time he signed a timesheet. Defrauding the state by using state employees to perform personal errands
and to perform work, such as mowing the grass at his home, is what landed Richie Farmer in the penitentiary. His actual crime was getting involved in a crooked ass governor's race.
According to the word of the law, C-Rod could receive up to a 5-year sentence for each offence. Even a hard ass prosecutor would likely allow the sentences to run concurrently
and recommend probation after serving 2 years as a worst case scenario.
Even though, most of us realize that C-Rod is likely not guilty of anything that 90% of UK athletes regularly take part in, defrauding the state is a serious felony charge.
A first offense DUI is a simple misdemeanor. From a legal standpoint, defrauding the state of public funds is by far the worst offence when the charges are compared.
A disgruntled employee, with an ax to grind or more likely with a payoff in mind, apparently elevated the issue to Mitch. Mitch screwed the pooch by not immediately paying hush money
and having the whistle blower sign a binding nondisclosure agreement putting an end to the nasty ass rotten crotch situation for good.
My God Son, says that C-Rod was blindsided with whole thing and was completely shocked that Mitch did not immediately resolve the issue in the same manner such issues are handled in 99.9%
of such petty ass, but stanky, stanky, big finger in the ass, affairs.
He also says, Coach Stoops is also highly pissed with Mitch for not following the CODE and went around Mitch to resolve the situation himself.
C-Rod says Coach Stoops has indeed resolved the issue. Stoops maintains that C-Rod was did his job, in complete accordance with the instruction that his supervisor provided.
As one would expect, Mitch Barnhart now concurs with Stoops that the issue resulted from a simple clerical error and a misunderstanding on behalf of the whistleblower.
Senior Management at the UK Hospital, after an exhaustive review, has concluded that indeed, C-Rod carried out his job duties as assigned by his supervisor and did so in an exemplary manner.
The internal investigation at the hospital determined that an error had been made during C-Rod’s onboarding process.
All University of Kentucky employment positions are organized by paygrade and are provided with a boiler plate job description which is merely indicative of the types of work activities
an employee MAY BE asked to perform in the respective position. The respective positions with the nonbinding job descriptions, number in the thousands.
They are stored in a data base and selected with the click of a mouse as a clerical staff employee develops a new employees personal employment file during the on boarding process.
In C-Rod’s case, the clerical employee erroneously placed an incorrect the wrong job title and work description in C-Rod's employee file. The error has been corrected.
C-Rod is expected to be suspended for 2 to 4 games for the DUI infraction which is apparently an unwritten athletic department rule for a first-time offender.
That means C-Rod will miss the following games:
1. Miami of Ohio (he should not be missed).
2. Florida (could result in blemishing what could be a historically good season)
3. Youngstown State (he should not be missed)
4. Northern Illinois (he should not be missed)
If, UK manages to beat Florida as a slight underdog in the Swamp, something they are very capable of doing against this less than stellar Gator team, C-ROD will be back for the Ole Miss Game in Oxford in what could be a top 15 matchup.
A win in Oxford would likely push UK int0 the top 10 to 12, with Georgia in Lexington, being the only game remaining on the schedule in which the Cats are not favored or at worst a 1 or 2 point dog in Knoxville.
This should be a highly entertaining season for the football Cats. Georgia is a tall order, but a few of the national pundits believe the Cats will give the Dogs a hell of a fight in Commonwealth.
It could be a historically good year. I am as excited as hell about the possibilities.
