Got inside when it opened--8:00pm sharp--Georgia idiots had thousands standing outside waiting for their precise opening.
Stood at the UK warm-up end and watched shooting drills ed by Antigua----
*Those knocking down most every perimeter shot were Wiltjer(smooth and smoother release)--Miller(a harbinger of the game to follow)--Jones(quick catch and shoot --seldom missed)!
The suprises were Lamb missing most of his perimeter shots, and Jones hitting everything, including quick release 3P and 15 foot pull up jumpers off the catch. Jones was deadly, and seemed to shoot relaxed, smoothly and nothing but nets. Wiltjer and miller were like machines.
*Davis has great form, hit some 3P shots, but mostly shot close to the hoop off feeds from Antigua. MKG was middlin from outside--nothing special.
*Free throw shooting practice had the regulars draining at 90%. Jones did not miss while I watched--nothing but twine, time after time. Jones defintely looks strained when shooting in a game, outside and free throws. His stroke during drills was superb, and I was very surprised.
*Crowd---talked with a "badge guy"--he said about 3 times more students and for any game this year, and twice as big a crowd. they gave away tee-shirts to the students, and the placed was almost 100% full. They were ramped up for a CAT killing--
*Jones lost the big euro twice for open 3P hits--Jones to the bench--then the same guy got his 2 putback baskets--all in the first 10 minutes--no more points for the night. Cal sent an early message about POOR defense.
*Cats tightened the screws on the defense end and ran out to the 12 point lead at the half. Wiltjer shot lkie in warm-ups--NETS. Miller shot like warm-ups--NETS. jones was pathetic shooting. Lamb hit some shots, but was lethargic most of the time--does he need his hair to be outstanding?
*2nd half started a like a house on fire--ran out to 51-36 lead. then, the missed shots, slow ball turned the game into a sleep inducing stupor. We were at the UK offensive end for the 2nd half--having moved from the end zone near the roof to the 2nd row of the upper deck(not very high up) and about the end line. Cal orchestrated the SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ball. opting to run specific SET plays every trip dpown the floor once the lead reached 16. Easy shots were missed--plays were run for specific players--Lamb hit a 3 out of a time-out. Cal was talking to Lamb as they broke huddle--I thought he was chewing on Lamb, but he was likely telling Lamb to be ready because the shot was coming--play executed--Lamb hits 3P.
Another time out of TO--Teague drives lane--lobs to Davis and the big euro pushes Davis while in the air--no shot--no free throws. then the exasperating play of the game--called set to Jones near the hoop--goes up, gets fouled, softly MISSES the shot--bricks 2 freebies--to the bench. Cal was pissed--and talked about the soft play after the game.
*MKG is a MANchild. Rebounds--DEFENSE on Pope---taking it to the hoop--assists---just a MANchild. He makes things happen, he goes hard ALL the time.
*Davis covers so much ground on defense it is scary. He REBOUNDS about 2 areas away from where he is when a shot is taken--he ignores the shoves and pushes and goes and gets the ball.
*Wiltjer---looked much better than on TV. Moved on defense, stayed with his foe, and kept his man off the boards. HIT 2 threes with the softest of shots--just a featherly soft shot. Will be huge against ZONES this season. He is ready to shoot it when left open.
*Vargas may not play again this season--he even looks soft during warm-ups.
*Teague--handled the ball, defended and ran the offense--shot poorly--pathetically--and only took 1 bad shot of his 7. the attempted layup that got blocked. Teague had 7 REBOUNDS---and 7 ASSISTS, with zero turnovers.
Watching Teague shoot before the game--he is potent and accurate withing 15-17 feet--but when he gets beyond the arc, his jerky motion causes a FLAT shot and not good results. Until his "hitch" or whatever it is is corrected, he will not be a threat from beyond the arc. Teague had 3 WIDE OPEN shots from the top of the key--and bricked um all. Good shots--poor results.
*Great defense after the first 8 minutes--great REBOUNDING after the first 6 minutes. Super A/To after the first 8 minutes(4 To in first 8 minutes). Fine 3P shooting(actually great except for Teague). EASY win an a tough place for UK to get easy wins.
*Cal seems to be slowing the game to FORCE the team to run set plays--then determining who wants the shot, who finishes the play and who he can depend on when crunch time comes in a tournament game. Plkays were run for Miller--Lamb--Jones--Davis(once--lob)---and often with Teague and/Gilchrist as the set-up man. Both Teague and Gilchrist appeared to perform their "duties" to Cal's liking. the finishes by Jones and Lamb exasperated Cal. He was chewing on them much of the 2nd half--for NOT finishing.
Miller caught Cal's ire a couple times for attempting to pass, rather than shooting once inside the zone at 10ft from the hoop.
*Cal was always "teaching". Directing plays and making um run sets---and it is obvious, the players prefer more "free lance" and thrive off their individual talents when left to a more wide open game, as the last 10 minutes of the first half became. Cal knows this bunch can RUN with anyone, and knock down shots when operating at full throttle. I believe he is trying to take every opportunity to get the same HIGH level efficiency from the team in the half court. He knows there comes a game where EVERY possession counts--and teams will sloooooooooo things down.
*CATS had total control by halftime, so CAL used the entire 2nd half as a teaching opportunity. I twas UGLY, but a far better environment for teaching and learning than at practice. The team attempted to follow instructions--but it impeded their ability to improvise and make things happen spontaneously. CAL wants both--the spontaneity, and the ability to run sets and overwhelm foes using both methods. By season end, this is gonna be a juggernaut of a team to beat.
