I loved the 78 team a great deal. I lost my point spread with Lee's final dunk. I really think the 96 team would win. More defense. It's really hard to tell who would win with different ages.

I really loved the '78 team. They could shoot, they were big,and they averaged 84 points a game WITHOUT a 3 point shot. 78' if there wasn't a 3 pt line....96' if there was....both awesome teams. I was 17 when the 78' team won it all....I remember that season viviidly....if helped the entire state overcome the disappointment of losing in 70' when we were robbed and 75' when we were robbed in the championship game against UCLA....that team was battle tested with the primary guys playing in the championship game in 75, winning the NIT in 76', losing in the elite 8 against Tarholes (robbed again), then winning it all...quite a legacy for that group...

The '78 team, because of their sheer bulk would be hard to beat by anybody today. Might not be the quickest team, but could outmuscle damn near anybody. If they had the 3 point shot back then, they would have been "lights out"...
I got to see them against LSU and Durand Macklin at Rupp. James Lee punked him with a dunk that came down and bounced off his head. '78 team was badass!!!

Wasn't he from Louisville ? Yep, Rudy Durrand Macklin. Never liked that SOB, but he could play. LSU also got the Higgs boy from Owensboro.

I was trying to think og that Oboro kid's name the other day. I recall him being a pretty good ball handler and shooter. Do you remember his name? I hated Dale Brown that year.

There were so many of those Higgs boys and they were all good at basketball, baseball and football. I've played against most of them. The one that went to LSU was the best basketball player of the bunch. I want to say his name was Dwight? No, that's wrong. I beleve Dwight was the one that played football at UK. The one at LSU was Kenny Higgs.

Hell after his freshman year Macklin tore UK a new one every time he played us. He, greg cook howard carter, dewanye teh astronaught scales, and ethan martin got their ass kicked by luvul after playing alcorn state mo asy draw till they hit IU) made a hell of a front court, Dale Brown recruited big quick players...basketball athletes, but could not coach worth a damn (dd , I remember pretty clearly his being asked why some of the kids he had didn't come in with the reps of say a Derrick Hord and played better, he responded by saying there were all americans and paper all americans, which is probably true but I hated the SOB anyway.
Hell for that matter I remember Neuter taking Alabama to a regional semi-final against Indiana, with Leon Douglas, a player named Cleveland, TR Dunn and a slew of really good players and getting his ass whipped 74-69 because he didn't know how to coach a big game

UK is their ncaa title game, their super bowl--and all else is insignificant in comparison. Sadly, that is why the sec is a total waste in the ncaa tournament. rr

With the exception of Givens the 78 team had maybe half the natural ability of the players on this team let alone 96.
The 96 team would of run the 78 team off the floor and won by 20 -- 96 was quick deep and althetic and played a full court press relentless something the 78 team wouldn't be able to deal with as they would have never really seen it. This team is better at every single position than 78.
you all say 78 for sake of it being 78 and it was 30 some years ago when you didn't need viagra to get it up. The game has totally changed players are faster , stronger , more athletic , more stamina , and more black players.

There are differences in eras, but players are players. Full court press? '78 would beat it everytime. I would put Jame Lee's strength against any '96 player. Robey and Phillips were bulls. It would be a great game.
