...to the ground! "Not all applauded when Roselle decided to fully cooperate with an NCAA investigation of the basketball program in 1988-89. But the decision led to two memorable phone calls of support. "I remember my secretary saying, 'Bob Knight is on the phone,'" Roselle said earlier this month. "I said, 'Bob Knight?'" Yes, it was Knight, then a fully bloomed icon as Indiana coach. "He started off the conversation, and it's burned in my memory, 'You know, Dr. Roselle, college presidents aren't my favorite group of people,'" Roselle recalled. "I said, 'Yeah, I heard that, Bob.' "He said, 'The reason is none of them have any (gumption). But, boy, you've got (gumption), what you're doing with that Kentucky thing.' " Knight showed his appreciation for the course Roselle set by offering to keep Kentucky a part of the then-Big Four Classic even if expected NCAA sanctions against the UK program included a ban on live television appearances. The Big Four was an annual doubleheader in Indianapolis pitting UK and Louisville against Indiana and Notre Dame. Because of an expected NCAA ban on live television appearances as part of a penalty for UK basketball rule-breaking, TV officials lobbied Knight to drop the Cats from the Big Four Classic and pick up LSU, which featured a star attraction in freshman Shaquille O'Neal. "There's no way I'd do that," Knight told Roselle. Roselle expressed his appreciation, but he asked the coach what he'd do if the TV executives insisted Kentucky be dropped from the Big Four. "He told me, 'I'll tell them to go (blank) themselves,' " Roselle said. Not long afterward, another prominent coach called Roselle to offer support: North Carolina's Dean Smith. Smith said UNC did not play Kentucky because "we play by a different set of rules," as Roselle recalled. But because of Roselle's cooperation with the NCAA, Smith called to offer to start a series. There is a great story behind the scenes with Roselle. Wallace Wilkerson was Gov and a huge UK fan. Not sure how it is today but if you were Gov you were also President of the BOTat the time.. When all the shit started coming down two people f%@!ed UK.
One was the no count CM Newton. The other was Roselle.
Both hated UK but in different ways. Roselle wanted to destroy sports at UK. CM wanted to destroy UK basketball because he wanted to finally get even with all the times we had kicked his ass over the years.
Both were successful in what they wanted to get done.
Roselle the story goes overlooked one person. Gov. Wilkerson. When it was all said and done and we had our f%@!ing ass handed to us by the NCAA with the help of Roselle and Newton, Wilkerson decided he had had enough.
Wilkerson called Roselle and had him meet him in the Gov's office. When Roselle got there, he was thinking the Gov had called him in to congratulate him. But it wasn't like that at all.
Wilkerson wouldn't even let him even sit in a chair. Told him you have two options here. One I'm going to run your ass out of town. The second option is you can retire and get out of town.
Roselle chose door number 2 and left to go to University of Delaware.
I actually believe that story, because not long after that Roselle was gone.
Those 2 men did more to hurt UK sports in general than any event in UK sports history.
LONG LIVE ERIC "MOON" MANUAL. AND f%@! THE ONES THAT TREATED HIM LIKE SCUM.

I don't believe that story for one reason: i believe that was the result roselle was aiming for when he sold the basketball program down the river--to parlay the destruction of UK hoops into an (pseudo, at least) ivy-league position.
actually, i never have believed that c.m. wanted to destroy UK basketball, and i still don't. nothing short of c.m. himself saying something to that effect ("I thought UK basketball had become corrupt and needed cleansing" or whatever) will ever change my mind on that

Cat2 posts: "Those 2 men did more to hurt UK sports in general than any event in UK sports history." Hey Cat2, I agree, but a close 3rd and maybe even number 1 was one tubshitsmift......his tryst at bringing down the program was/would be a slower version of Roselle....smift was clearly on the road.....had UK as a second tier headed for a mid major in basketball.... Another one in the running for the ones that did more to destroy UK basketball were quite simply the ones who WANTED smiff to stay on as coach....you know the ones...the ones who luv him today but mostly the "social Uk fans" and the ones who never missed an opportunity to holler "racists" at the ones wanting UK to come back to the top of our mountain in the environs of college basketball....I'd put near put THEM at number one also...

Regardless if you believe the story or not, I'm confident its basically true.
As to CM I personally saw the hate and vile the man had for UK up close and personal one evening under Rupp Arena. The man hated UK.
Our answer was to put him in charge of the whole damn thing. I believe the story. Many people very close to the program believe it to be true as well. I'm not talking about the fans of the last 15 years, I'm speaking of fans from well back in the 60s.
I only will say one name and it says everything you'd ever want to know about CM.
ERIC "MOON" MANUAL.
The most despicable act I ever saw in college athletics has CM's fingerprints all over it.

FWIW I was told basically the same thing about Wilkerson laying down the law to Rosselle. Another one that tried to talk Rosselle out of what he was doing was Chandler. Don't know whether this is true or not but Rosselle was told that if UK appealed the California thing that the NCAA would have to relent because of questionable evidence that the NCAA had received but Rosselle was adamant about not questioning NCAA probation.

I believe everything that Blue added above.
As f%@!ed up as UK is and has been over the years, wouldnt be surprised if we didnt change the name of Rupp to Newton Arena.
The man f%@!ed up once in his mind when he hired Pitino. Pitino then turned around and exploded on the scene.
Im sure CM is enjoying the condo today.

The whole Emory package thing was a farce.....Any person with half a brain could see that was a setup by a UCLA fan over the Chris Mills recruitment....Duane Casey sued the shit of the NCAA and won...
as far as Roselle goes he is a weasel that did it to garner himself a quote and unquote "more prestigious" position....Having Dean Smith and Bobby Knight sucking up to him tells you even more about the situation.....those two act like they were clean as a the driven snow....we all know the General's antics and the Tarholes have been breaking rules forever in a day.....the football program just got cooked....you can't tell me that shit hasn't gone on before in the basketball program...

Dr. Roselle most likely saved the program...see SMU for further details.
As for WallyWeasel, he was not the chair of the BOT at the time but he did wield great power over many he had appointed. Roselle's firing had nothing to do with basketball, but was merely a power play to get Wethington installed as Pres. Wethington was from Casey County and a longtime pal of Wally. Why else would someone who was running community colleges be qualified to head up our flagship university??
