These protestors seem to think tearing down statues and memorials do away with their legacies good and bad.
These fools do not realize that this form of censoring and destruction only fans the flames, you burn the books the histories will continue by word of mouth and like all things will get warpped into the history being better or worse then it really was.
The way to handle any of this is to let them stand, teach history good and bad teach the truth good and bad let people decide for themselves if they want the bad and all the ramifications or the good for that matter. There are always grey areas but the average Joe, Joline will end up doing the right thing. What can we do? First and foremost education and that's a tough one because its pretty obvious many of the writers and chroniclers of history and the teachers have a maniacal need to express their views in the teaching. You must teach the facts and let the students decide and make their own opinions. I for one would like to see the abolition of AP courses, first if your into equal opportunity the AP kids are segregated and in a different class of teaching. Second teachers like teaching those because those students are by nature are sharper and hence easier to teach need less help. Go back to true basics, reading, writing, and arithmetic, make sure these kids and read and interpret, make sure they can do a little math reasoning, make sure they can express their thoughts reasonably well in writing. Do away with the damn achievement test linked to teachers compensation, all they teach is the test not the basics of what is needed to work past the test. Someway make it possible to fire a bad teacher or administrator same for cops for that matter. And most of all realize that not everyone should go to college, have the opportunity yes whether they can make it or not but its not a right. Fact is not everyone wants to go to college, some want to be LPN's, Chef's, Machinist, Welders etc. Used to be that was honorable now its looked on as a failure (I give you Bloomberg and his farmer) by the frikkin' elite that depend on the great unwashed.
We can't learn from our mistakes unless we understand the mistakes of the past. Destroying these things accomplishes absolutely nothing other then destroying rock or bronze or iron and seeing a bunch of cowards spit on and kick an inanimate object representing an event or individual from 200 years ago. We destroy the history on how people lived during that time, we lose the perspective of understanding the evil produced and the good produced. Next thing you know they will want destruction of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of rights because some of the people who participated in their creation were slave owners..yes and yet they somehow managed to produce the very documents that give us at least the ability if not the sense to protest and affect lasting good change for those atrocities.
We have a glorious history in this country, most of it good, a lot bad we are as a people all flawed but always moving forward and improving sometimes slowly sometimes with rapid change we learn by our history not by destroying and rewriting the narrative
