Although getting rid of Begok and replacing him with Pope is an obviously good thing, the game of college basketball with the unlimited NIL payouts has destroyed amateur athletics and reduced it to a pure money grab and nothing else. In the process, innumerable baby boomer fans like myself, simply aren’t going to be watching paid professional teenagers play a game with no loyalty whatsoever to the team they happen to be playing for in that particular season, and just awaiting where they will transfer to the next year. If I was into that I would just watch the NBA which I don’t.
The 4 year Duke player, Roache, who would have been the integral component on the pre season number 1 ranked team for the coming season, has decided he’s leaving Duke to go wherever he can to make the most money. How must that make the Duke fans feel? Betrayed no doubt. That would be like Anthony Davis playing for UK for three years and then transferring his senior year. Saw something else where Jerry Jones has made it known he will pay double whatever anyone else is willing to pay for a player to sign with Arkansas. The result is nothing bur a bidding system where hired mercenaries come on college campuses for 8 months and then immediately seek out their next employer with zero loyalty to their current team. Although I do not begrudge the athletes for taking advantage of the situation, it offends my generation’s ethos regarding the sanctity of amateur athletics. As a result, Kentucky or no Kentucky, I probably won’t be watching a great deal of basketball in the years to come. It simply doesn’t hold my interest. As most people my age have learned, in the end, money screws up everything and leaves an empty, hollow feeling toward anything it has infected. Unfortunately, college sports is just the latest example of that sad truth.

If you accept Nil. Then all the money you till it hits the cost of tuition/RnB) for that year is paid back to university. After that it's the players money. To be honest the player should get money if it exceeds tuition/Rb.
College sports are now pro sports. I just hope it can last a while longer before falling apart

Players have always been paid, its just legal now. The problem in America is the Woke "virus" and TDS.
I can follow a team that is semi pro because money is a tool that folks need to live.

He was married and had a child. The school allowed him to live in a house the school owned rent free. They gave him a paid job as caretaker (though all he had to do was run off any trespassers). This was over 60 years ago at a small college. Imagine what big schools did.

UK players “worked” at horse farms for years… Not much difference if you ask me….I’m ticked about the Tarholes getting away with academic fraud not players getting paid..

In some ways I agree with steve and in some ways I agree with rr. Right now, I'm willing to head back and watch UK next season to see how things turn out. Yeah, it's true college basketball has basically become a basketball minor league but I'm willing to see how all this shakes out. I don't care at all about pro sports, but steve may be right in that this will turn into a poor-man's version of pro sports. It is broken but its the cards we are dealt with and for now, I'm just going to enjoy not having to look at Donut on UK's sidelines. One thing I've learned over the last few years, I need to continually evaluate how to spend my time and money so if I find UK basketball worth neither, I'll move on. But for now, GO CATS!

Good post Smyrncat. I think we have the same perspective on the situation. My only point was even if players in the old days got paid under the table they were still with the team for 2-3 years and played for the name on the jersey. Today it’s totally different. Players are nothing but seasonal employees. Mercenaries who are only looking for their next deal with another team. Sorry, but that’s not something I’m going to follow for very long. Wish Pope the best and grateful the con man is gone. We’ll see how it progresses.

I think there needs to be a cap on it across the board. Every scholly player on every team gets 100k. The million dollar stuff needs to stop. I would’ve been ecstatic receiving 100k per year when I was in college.

The current dollar will collapse and the world is going to change in the next couple years, lets just ride the demons out until.....Pray for Trump. Without him, then none of this will really matter.
In the meantime, enjoy the enjoyable.
