In many cases, racking up college debt is a bad start to a great financial future.
Of course, that depends on the reason for going to college.
Some degrees are just pieces of paper that remind you that debt has moved in to stay. Thou shall be slave to the lender as you have fond memories of learning basket weaving and some other bullshit nobody will pay you to know.

So streeter as katman missed the fact that your sons education is taken care of and you have no debt in thst respect as you did the smart thing and did a fund. Katmans response in pretty non applicable. I repeat i agree with your course of action should that happen

I took it as Katman speaking generically and not to a specific case. If memory serves, Streeter's son might be interested in a military career at some point.

Depends on the degree achieved. Going to college and getting a degree can be like going to the toilet and taking a dump!!
except--the first costs $150,000-$500,000 and the 2nd is for free if taken at a truck stop.
What degree achieved determines the value!!
a ba in ebonics is worth less than taking a DUMP at a truck stop. At least the dump relieved some pain.

Yes, "in general" racking up debt is a bad thing, especially in college because colleges can have activist Professors getting funds from enemy China to further subvert the United States.
I would like to see a return to more trade schools and a national revolution against communism, specifically against China and the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) who have many US politicians in their hip pocket.
Maybe off target a bit, but the education system has been hijacked by common core (Dumb down the youth in lower grades) Then in college, create Social Justice warriors who inadvertantly OR ON PURPOSE carry water for the Communist Chinese and for a global initative headed by America haters Soros, Gates, ect.
In the end, do we want Life , Liberty, The pursuit of happiness and a Constitutional Republic or do we want Communism?
You might ask, what does this have to do with racking up college debt? It's simple, until the Communist threat is defeated, going to college for 4 years to build a "FUTURE" is futile with the threat still hanging in the balance.
Gotta clean out government (Drain The Swamp)
Its time for the universal RED PILL folks. We can go on pretending its about D vs R.

My kid is at UGA on the Zell Miller scholarship - Honors Program - Econ. My out of pocket this year was about $10k. GA Lottery is covering the lion's share of the cost. Great program - let the idiot lottery players pay for my kid's education.

I was at UK from 70-74 inclusive of masters had a scholly in fact two of 'em that being said tuition never got more then 290 a semester R and B about 600 at the new Kirwan (at that time...damn I'm getting old). total cost was a bit over 6000 accounting for starting - ending tuition and R & B. I got a quality education in particular for a place that's supposed to be backward according to the eastern and western elites, had a great collage experience had a 20 minute personal conversation with Coach Rupp while doing some injury rehab not cause he had to by the way, but because he wanted to and was interested. UK was actually fairly activist then less so then in RR's time, but it was a University no damn snow flakes on campus, just young semi adults. The only things that have changed really are the babified hurt feeling students, profs that like the academic life and control of our minds, and too damn much money being spent on things other than the educational experience. Hell except for one class (dynamics) I had full professors teaching labs included, and the dynamics class was taught by a Physics Phd grad student who had a MS in Engineering Mechanics. Even my damn American history classes were taught by a full prof.
RR is correct, folks are getting screwed at the state level I can't imagine how much on the private college level. Like Streeter my wife and I saved for her education she got a scholly for soccer which until her senior year was a bout 1/4 of the tuition so we were prepared. Now I'm happy to say my daughter makes almost as much as a COO for a company more as my wife and I together. Rice be expensive too but oddly if you need the money schollys and grants to aid the tuition are plentiful and one wouldn't have to go broke to get em.
College is great but not all are cut out for or should be in college, it wasn't in my time and shouldn't be today an advanced day care center. Teaching great vocations in HS is honorable and gives some a chance to go to work make money and if the urge hits and the sense to apply ones self hits 'em they can go to college learning something that will help in their vocations.
And no offense to anyone other then buying a lottery ticket I do not feel the need to pay for everyone's college, I know things are harder but college isn't a God given right or a government right, its a personal choice that we as a public don't need to pay for.

I didn't go to college. I'm living the American dream at 64.
If I had it to do over again, I would flip the first part of my life, where I was a Democrat, and just go right after, and support the infrastructure of the the American dream, as opposed to being on the side that wants it destroyed sytematically.

I met with Rupp for about 30 minutes, discussing walking on as a frosh. Anyone with a b'ball skill could "tryout", but after a little thought and recognizing my priority--get out of college asap as cheaply as possible--I never made the effort. No regrets ever.
Life is about making choices, the more good ones, the better the results. sorta like "LUCK", the harder one works, the luckier they are.
